How we choose

coco-lele is a catalogue, not a shop. We look for clothes, kids' wear and home goods made from natural materials, check what the maker says they are made of, and link you to the shop that sells them.

What gets in

  • The main material is 100% natural. The fabric, lining, filling or upper is made of natural fibres or materials: cotton, linen, wool (merino, camel, alpaca), silk, hemp, natural latex, cork, leather, natural rubber, or plant husks such as spelt or buckwheat.
  • Blends of natural materials are fine. A wool and cotton hat, or a linen blanket filled with merino, is in. A blend with polyester, acrylic, nylon, elastane or viscose is out.
  • The composition is written down by the maker. We list the composition exactly as the maker or shop states it, with the date we checked it.
  • The shop sells to customers in Europe.

The devil is in the detail

We read the whole composition, not just the headline material. But not every part of a product matters in the same way, so we look at what each part does.

  • Everything that touches your skin has to be natural. The fabric of a shirt and its lining, a pillowcase and the filling inside it, the textile part of a shoe.
  • Parts that change how a product works are checked too. A shoe sole never touches your skin, but it decides how you walk. A plastic sole can stiffen in the cold and grip less on a winter pavement than rubber, so we check what the sole is made of.
  • Small parts that do neither can be synthetic. Zips, shoelaces, sewing thread and woven labels are often polyester, even in carefully made products. They don't change what you sleep in or walk in, so we don't leave a product out because of them. When we know about them, we say so on the product page.

What stays out

  • Products where the composition is missing or unclear. Until we can confirm it, a product stays off the site.
  • Synthetic fibres in the main material, however small the percentage.

What we don't do

  • We don't test products ourselves. We go by what the maker publishes, and check it again from time to time.
  • We don't call products "eco-friendly", "sustainable" or "green". We tell you what a product is made of, and you decide.
  • Certifications such as GOTS or OEKO-TEX are mentioned only when the maker states them for that product.
